I find the artist’s statement to be a tricky thing. It’s like trying to hear your own voice. Few people know what they sound like to others. I somehow feel that even if I could define my art I would be fixing it in time and place. But that is contrary to my belief that art is a flexible, evolving thing that changes even while you are creating it.
I like painting things. And I like a puzzle. The starting point is often design oriented. I like to combine line with three dimensional objects. The subject matter varies – portrait/figure, still life, architecture. It is often a sense of being caught off guard that starts to form an image, of ‘what am I looking at?’ In the attempt to answer that question the puzzle begins and the image source becomes less important. For me, learning something new with each project is part of the goal.
